Moody App launches new mode for pregnancy loss and maternal mental health
Most pregnancy apps focus almost exclusively on the baby’s development
A new digital tool is shining a light on one of the most neglected areas of women’s health: maternal mental wellbeing and pregnancy loss.
The UK-based health tech company Moody has unveiled a new mode in its hormone-tracking app designed to support women through pregnancy, postpartum, and pregnancy loss. It arrives at a time of growing awareness around how poorly understood and underdiagnosed maternal mental health conditions remain.
Globally, one in five women experience perinatal mental health conditions such as anxiety and depression, yet half go undiagnosed, according to the World Health Organization. Pregnancy loss, which affects one in four pregnancies, often leaves a lasting emotional toll - 80% of women report enduring distress.
These experiences are deeply personal and widely shared, yet too often met with silence. Hormonal changes in pregnancy and the postpartum period can lead to intense mood shifts, anxiety, and postpartum depression - affecting one in seven new mothers. Yet, most pregnancy apps focus almost exclusively on the baby’s development, leaving women feeling isolated and emotionally unprepared.
“I'd never experienced deep depression - until I faced pregnancy loss,” said Amy Thomson, CEO of Moody.
“It was a harsh awakening to how desperately we need more conversations and resources. Moody's goal [is] to prioritise the mother's mental and hormonal health, unlike traditional apps focused solely on fetal development.”
Moody’s new feature is designed to help women better understand and manage the hormonal shifts that underpin much of this emotional turmoil. The app offers hormonal tracking to monitor fluctuations affecting mood and energy, alongside wellbeing insights that connect hormone changes to sleep, stress, and physical symptoms. Crucially, the new mode includes specific emotional and hormonal guidance for women navigating postpartum experiences and pregnancy loss.
Dr Sohere Roked, a women's health advisor at Moody, said:
“While nothing replaces personalised care, access to clear, reliable information is essential. Moody empowers women to understand hormonal changes and take action for their wellbeing.”
Developed by an all-female tech team, the feature aims to centre real female experiences - something often lacking in mainstream health technologies.
Dr Louise Rix, a medical advisor for Moody, said:
“Hormones' impact on mental health is one of the most overlooked areas in women's health. I'm proud to have helped create a tool that truly supports women.”
The company behind the app, Moody Month, has built a platform that leverages AI and machine learning to track hormonal patterns across various stages of life, including menstruation, perimenopause, pregnancy, and loss. It claims to be the first app of its kind using hormone data to predict and support women’s mental health needs across these transitions.
The launch marks a significant step forward in recognising and addressing the emotional and hormonal complexities women face during and after pregnancy - experiences that, until now, have been routinely underrepresented in digital health innovation.
