The90 launches UV-tracking wearable aimed at personalised sun exposure monitoring
The California-based company says its jewellery-style device measures real-time UVA and UVB exposure, with backing from beauty entrepreneur and investor Lauryn Bosstick.
The90, a California-based preventative skin health company, has launched a wearable device designed to help women monitor their exposure to ultraviolet radiation in real time.
The company’s first product, The90 Gem, combines a pendant-style wearable with a companion smartphone app that tracks UVA and UVB exposure and provides personalised guidance based on an individual’s skin profile, sunscreen use and protective behaviours.
The90 says the device differs from conventional UV index data by measuring conditions in a user’s immediate environment rather than relying on location-based estimates.
The company has secured backing from a group of consumer and technology investors, including entrepreneur and podcast host Lauryn Bosstick, founder of The Skinny Confidential, who is also joining the company as an advisor.
“Women are already investing in SPF, treatments, tools, and routines to protect their skin, but when it comes to sun exposure, most of us are still guessing,” Lauryn said.
“The UV index on your phone doesn’t know your skin, your sunscreen, or the small moments of exposure that happen throughout the day. The90 gives women the missing data to make smarter decisions and stay ahead of skin aging before it starts.”
Habit-forming skincare
The90 was founded by chief executive Stacy Salvi, who previously worked in the wearables sector, including at Fitbit before its acquisition by Google.
Salvi said the company was seeking to combine consumer technology with a product women would be willing to wear regularly.
“True innovation happens when deep technology is wrapped in a high-end, modular aesthetic that women actually want to wear,” she said.
“We are on the cusp of a skincare revolution. The90 transforms sunscreen from a one-time morning ritual into an adaptive, responsive system built around your actual UV load. We want to empower women to stop guessing and finally own their light, strategically harnessing the sun for optimal health.”
According to the company, The90 Gem measures both UVA and UVB exposure throughout the day and uses that information to generate personalised UV thresholds, sunscreen reapplication reminders and recommendations around sun exposure.
The device is available from launch for $299, with a discounted early-access offer available to members of The Skinny Confidential community.
The launch comes as wearable health technology continues to expand beyond activity tracking and sleep monitoring into more specialised areas of prevention. While fertility and hormonal health have dominated much of the women's health wearable market to date, a growing number of companies are now targeting areas such as metabolic health, longevity, skin health and environmental exposure.
